A Tour of 2 hours

A 2 hour tour to explore two of the most ancient buildings that Carlo Scarpa, an iconic architect, restyled: the Olivetti Shop on St.Mark’s square and the ground floor and garden of the Palazzo Querini Stampalia.

Join us in exploring the work of the modernist Carlo Scarpa. Whether you liked an introduction to this Italian icon or wanted to dive deeper into his lesser known contributions to Venice and the Veneto region, this tour provides an exciting overview of the world-famed architect’s contributions to his native region.

Scarpa’s work can be found all over Venice and this tour focuses on two buildings that boast intricate interiors redesigned by the famous Italian architect: the Palazzo Querini Stampalia (1961-63) and the Olivetti Shop (1957-58).

The Palazzo Querini Stampalia’s ground floor has been altered significantly and to great effect. Scarpa’s watery entrance draws you in through the main hall;  on the left side you can see the more recent intervention by Mario Botta (2001) and if you venture further on, discover a beautiful back garden. As we leave Castello and head closer to St. Mark’s Square – hidden in the 15th century Procuratie Vecchie – you’ll find Scarpa’s famous Olivetti Shop. The interior is a testament to Scarpa’s extreme attention to detail. A beautiful space with a unique staircase and a bronze sculpture by Alberto Viani. It retains a startling modernity despite its commercial frontage, and is well worth a visit.

For those who wish to venture further,  we can also explore lesser known contributions by Scarpa around the city, such as secret gates, entrance halls and even the ticket office of the Venice Biennale! Scarpa’s work can be viewed throughout the Veneto region.  And for those who wish to immerse themselves fully, we can extend the tour to the restyled Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona and the Brion family tomb near Treviso.

Highlights: ground floor of Palazzo Querini Stampalia, Olivetti shop.
