The Accademia Gallery is one of Europe’s finest, home to great art masterpieces produced by renowned Venetian artists such as Vivarini, Cima, Bellini, Carpaccio, Giorgione, Tiziano, Veronese and Tintoretto.
Most of these great artworks were originally located inside churches, monasteries, and the meeting halls of brotherhoods which were all closed between 1806 and 1810 by the French authorities during the occupation of Venice. They were brought together and concentrated in a former monastery and brotherhood to serve as an educational collection for the Academy of Fine Arts students. Napoleon founded it, toghether with similar academies in France and other parts of Italy. Over time the collection grew as other works were donated or bought during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The array of artworks on display is now considered the best in Venice, so join us in the Accademia gallery, meeting at the entrance, to explore a selected itinerary of significant works on display and create your own path through over five centuries of great Venetian painting. This tour lasts 2 hours and will offer you an overview of the greatest Venetian works produced in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries: by the end you will understand how these masterpieces inspired the modern European masters such as Goya and Monet.
To complete our art tour we’ll head to the nearby Dominican church of Gesuati, overlooking the Giudecca canal. This is the perfect spot to pause and admire Venice’s 18th century genius, Giambattista Tiepolo and see his work as it was intended in its original setting.
