Art lovers Two
A 3 hour tour exploring the ancient brotherhood of San Rocco with the monumental pictorial cycle by Jacopo Tintoretto in its original setting followed by the majestic medieval Frari Church abode of Titian and Bellini painting masterpieces.
The Scuole in Venice were the seats of lay congregations that organized most of the non-working activities of bourgeois. Their success, prestige, and wealth were to be shown, not only through the charitable deeds for which they were firstly responsible, but also through financing lavishly expensive decorations in the buildings that hosted these institutions.
The name of the Saint Rocco brotherhood still has resonance in Venice to this day. Saint Rocco is reputed to be the greatest achievement of Tintoretto in the city, and his paintings reveal much about both his art and his life. Conveniently located just a few steps away, the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa epitomises the close relationship between the Franciscan order and their affluent patronage in Venice.
Local citizens and some foreign communities were the main patrons and promoters for the construction and decoration of what the Venetians called the Big House. Here we shall stop to admire, among many other works, Titian’s ‘Assumption’ and ‘Pesaro’ altarpieces and Bellini’s ‘Madonna and Saints’ as well as the tomb of the so called ‘father’ of Opera: Claudio Monteverdi.
Highlights: Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
